Remember the Titans Essay Example

Remember the Titans Essay Example Remember the Titans Essay Remember the Titans Essay Coach Boone has been using different source of power run through the whole movie. There are many times when power come into play both on and off the field. At the beginning of the movie, as a black and white football team members clash in racially motivated conflicts; Coach Boone frequently uses legitimate power which refers to the formal authority based on a person’s position in the hierarchy and coercive power which refers to a power base dependent on fear of punishment for noncompliance. The best moment to demonstrate this combination of two types of power is at the beginning of the camp. Bertier comes up to coach Boone and states what is the structure of the team going to be both on offence and defence because he is the only All-American on the team. Coach Boone uses his legitimate power to absolutely flip the situation into the fact that he is now becoming Bertier’s daddy. In addition, Coach Boone uses pressure influence tactic which refers to the use of coercive power through threats and demands. He clearly states that Bertier had better do what Coach Boone wants him to do if he wants to play football on the team. This is a tough situation for Bertier but since Boone effectively used his power, he was able to get the followers to fall into line. At the end of the movie, when the Titans is trailing by 4 points and there is 17 seconds left on the clock, Coach Boone uses referent power and expert power to teach ‘Rev’ change the strategy on the offence since the coach on the other team has already read his game. This change on strategy effectively helps the Titans win the championship. The influence of tactic that Coach Boone uses is consultation. In Remember the Titans the locker room scene where they use verbal humor by calling an individual on a team â€Å"sunshine† because of his golden locks and also by trash talking about each other’s momma’s. This trash talking is the ability to joke around about a sensitive topic such as one’s mom but by this group cohesion that they are forming makes this subject not so sensitive. From the reminding of sunshine’s hair of Bertier’s Momma, to when Lastik complains about his back problem for giving Petey Jone’s mom a piggy back ride. The group cohesion is even more well seen by the singing of â€Å"Ain’t no mountain high enough† when both the African American’s and the White members of the team join in to sing for this team bonding moment. 6) The group conflict between Ray Budds group and the whole idea of allowing African America’s to play on the same team as the whites. This conflict that Ray Budds has with this team conflict is classified as an Ego Conflict. Unlike Simple Conflict where it is just a disagreement over facts and easy to resolve, Ego Conflict is a lot harder to solve because an individual cannot point a finger at the issue but instead has to reach inside his personal well being to solve the problem. His Ego Conflict continues as he finds a common group of individual’s in the movie that agree with his views rather than opening himself to a different group who do not share his views so he can find a solution to his Ego Conflict. We can notice through his facial expression how he shows disgust and hatred towards the African Americans as one of his group members gets involved in singing â€Å"Aint no mountain high enough. † This facial expression is emphasized in this scene because one of his group members joined in to resolve his issue which Ray could have done as well but his Ego was too strongly against this issue to even consider it. 10) At the end of the movie the racial issue between the African American’s and the Whites is finally resolved between the players. The group/team members finally came together for two main reasons from what I saw. The first reason is the most important reason because of the group/team came upon a common goal that they shared which was to win. They realized as a team that if they continued to be segregated they were going to be unable to reach this goal. They also realized that each individual on the team had something to bring, the Interdependence of relying on one another in a specific position helped them realize that they were going to need Petey Jone’s speed and hands as a wide receiver and Gery Bertier leadership to come together to reach this common goal. Another main reason why they came together was the domino theory. As one individual fell and saw the pros of desegregating the team another individual would follow. The coaches in this part played a huge roll because of the leadership they have, as soon as Coach Boon and Coach Bill got on the same page and accepted desegregation the team followed. These choices were all by individual as some of the individuals quit because of this racial war and would not change for the better of themselves and the team.

Bond Markets and Hedge Funds

While watching the video, this video came in my mind again and again, and it would be most suitable to talk about this in this paper. After a thorough research, it could be found out that the debate regarding which market is bigger and better has been up for long but talking about my perception and as per the proofs with me, the bond market is undoubtedly greater than the stock exchange. There are some reasons for proving this assertion (Cheng, 2010). Firstly, let us talk about the size of each of these markets and after that, we can talk about other aspects of these two markets. As of today, the bond market is estimated to be more than mind blowing $82 trillion whereas on the other hand stock market is estimated to be around $40-$50 trillion. This estimated evaluation alone puts the bond market in the front seat as it is more than twice the size of the stock market which speaks volumes about the value of the bond market. Another important aspect is that bond market has a higher and larger number of issuers than the stock market. The different segments of issuers range from corporate, government, municipal, funding; mortgage supported, etc. Whereas the stock market has issuers from a particular set of corporate sector panies and for example, in the United States of America, there are around 17,000 enterprises of the public sector. One thing which cannot be neglected is that stock market is undoubtedly more influential on sentiments. Now for example, if someone asks what is the key indicator for the stock market? They will get an apt reply S&P 500 or Dow most probably but on asking the same question for a bond market most of the people would remain clueless (e.g.,. Indexes such as Merrill Lynch Domestic Master) this gives the stock market a wider and broader voice and reach. Now once that has been discussed, as per my assumption bond market remains more powerful and influential than the stock market. The reason for saying so is that bond markets have a stable and fixed return guaranteed and hence, they are more predictable. Now if the yields are naturally high, then their does not generate a need for investing time and one in stocks. There is no similar risk reward. But yes, definitely if the yields are quite low in bonds then it would be wiser to switch to stocks. This is what gives the bond market the advantage as they are predictable and the customers can switch as per their ease but this does not work so smoothly in stock markets, and one does not have the privilege to predict stocks, and they are much more volatile. Hence, it can be said that this analysis is not a clear or high-end research work but still practically it is quite apt, and if this question is asked personally then definitely the answer would be that bond markets are much stronger and influential than the stock markets (Staff, 1995). It is also imperative to understand that both bond and stock markets are closely webbed, and most of the major stakeholders have a good hold in both these markets and keep shifting their funds from one to another as per the requirements. The stock market will always remain tempting and glamorous amidst the general masses but yes no doubt bond market will have greater influence as it es with the benefit of stability and guaranteed returns and attracts more institutional cash. This question has been pondering for a longer period but after watching the video, it certainly incited me to write about this issue the very first time when this question came across was when the opposition of Labour party in the UK accused the governing party of the Conservative party of giving away favours to its hedge fund managers. By the year 2015 since 2010, more than fifty percent of the cream layer of these hedge funds had donated their money to the Conservative party which when totalled estimates around Euro ten million. Since then and in past also, these hedge fund managers have been recognized as experts in investment skills and also known for their wealth. But how do these experts of investment work? Let us see in the subsequent sections. Well, it is peculiar to understand that rather than being recognized as an asset class, they are more correctly defined by the structure possessed by them. Hedge funds have a long history, and it all started when in the 1940's a man named Alfred Winslow Jones had set up an investment structure which helped him to bet for the fall as well as the rise of the prices and charge a small fee as his performance fee. It again got a boost in the late 1990's especially when George Soros speculation forced sterling out of the mechanism of the exchange rate, and he was dubbed as the man who broke the England bank (Clarke, 2007). Now talking about hedge funds in detail, they can be called as the pots of money which are opened or revealed only to a specific set of investors who usually use a set of plex instruments and strategies. In the beginning, they were assigned the job to produce an absolute or positive return in the market, and this had to be done by betting on falling prices and also for long shots by relying on the market for rising prices. Now, for example, a hedge fund can bet on BP, which is a big giant pany in the sector of petroleum and oil by buying its shares and on the other hand shorting the market. This short allows the hedge fund to bet on an individual pany and at the same time insulating the fund from the bigger risk of taking a loss due to a big decline in the market. More often than not, hedge funds try to exploit the small mispricing of the market which can pay off in a handsome amount only and only if the best are all leveraged. Most of the fund try and magnify their resources by the help of borrowed money. It is peculiar to notice that this approached can be applied by the hedge fund owners for different types of markets ranging from shares, mergers, currencies and equity (Economist, 2015). To reflect the higher skill set, fund managers charge more than the mutual fund managers. Conventionally these hedge fund managers earn a â€Å"two and twenty" i.e. a 2% annual charge from the capital which is under management and a performance fee of twenty percent from the profits earned and this is the reason why so many hedge fund managers are rich as they get a handsome amount for the duties they impart (Gad, 2013). But now a lot of things have been changing as the regulators are keeping a closer eye on these managers and even the investors have started demanding for much lower fees especially due to recent performances with average results from these managers. Hence, in the end, it can be said that bond markets are more important than the stock market if not on scientific research methods then at least as per the practical and available arguments. Secondly, the hedge fund owners have been getting a lot of money because of the policy of two plus twenty which gives them handsome amount of payback Cheng, L. Theory and practice of managing people Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Theory and practice of managing people - Essay Example FollyWood is a large, open-air theme park where the vast majority of the employees serve on a seasonal basis. It was recently acquired by a large leisure company, Leisure, Inc., but is still run as a separate entity. FollyWood pursues a â€Å"hard approach† and does not exert any effort to generate employee commitment among its seasonal staff. As a result, the firm experiences high turnover among its seasonal staff, which is assumed to cause the fall in profits and increase in customer complaints. In light of these antecedents, this report takes the position that FollyWood should assume a comprehensive approach towards reducing the turnover of seasonal staff and motivating its staff, both seasonal and permanent, towards more productive and fulfilling relations with the customers, the company and its leadership, their co-workers, and other parties they deal with at work. The report shall touch on: 1. Undertake a job analysis and restructuring program (Heron, 2005). It is likely that the number of seasonal workers may be reduced in favour of increasing the permanent staff. This will require creating positions that may combine seasonal functions with permanent ones, or realising economies of scale organisation-wide by integrating operations and sharing personnel with other units of Leisure, Inc. Activities that may be accomplished long this line include: 1.1. Perform a job description analysis of existing positions. This will clarify what actions are expected of individual employees in order to set fair compensation horizontally and vertically throughout the organisation. 1.2. Rationalise seasonal functions that may be combined to create more permanent or year-long regular jobs. The purpose of this task is to reduce the number of â€Å"seasonal† staff and instead increase the number of employees who would be able to dedicate their full-time efforts to the FollyWood. 1.4. Enhance job enrichment for currently existing positions. Job enrichment is

Ultimate Project Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Ultimate Project - Essay Example Civil projects, on the other hand, are concerned with the study of public infrastructure such as roads, bridges and ports. In a construction project, members of a group subdivide themselves into design, financial advisors and legal teams. The three groups must work together to achieve results in the construction projects. When a construction project is taken seriously, and all its recommendations followed, it can lead to substantial achievements. A construction project is, therefore, a strong basis in the foundation of building construction. The following sessions were assistive in the course, and they are listed in line with their importance. In the above classifications, session one to eight had greater impacts on the construction project than the others. Introduction to Project Management The main topics, to begin with section four, are co-operation and togetherness. Co-operation entails offering assistance and having the willingness to assist in situations where possible (Taylor 45). When people work together, their productivity is increased. This is due to the belief that there is strength in numbers. Togetherness refers to the act of keeping closeness towards each other (Muller 43). Togetherness entails being united and acting as a group to boost levels of understanding. Some of the most essential aspects of this quality are in unlocking barriers that hinder teamwork. The importance of cooperation and togetherness cannot be underestimated under any circumstance. This session’s topic bears great relevance to the construction project. In a construction project, a lot of concentration is demanded. The group members need to come up with new techniques that are transformative in the construction sector. Members’ need should have a clear mind so as to note minor sensitive issue and discuss them effectively. This requires full concentration and cooperation. In these types of projects, every member’s contribution counts. Introduction to Finan ce In session five, focus and patience are the main topics. Patience refers to a virtue that enables people to wait for something to happen without hesitation. When a group is working on a project, they expect quality results out of the project. An excellent project requires a lot of time since the members have to execute conclusive and elusive research to determine facts. The members need to be patient in order to discover good results. Patience plays a substantial role in determining the success of any activity. Patience must be advocated every time since it carries the secret to success (Taylor 24). In our day-to-day lives, we encounter a lot. Sometimes we are faced with situations that are hard to manage, but we still make the right choices. When a person encounters something that is not clear to them, how they react to it matters a lot. When they analyze the situation, they can find ways of solving the problem (Taylor 4). The same scenario is faced by people who are handling a project. Construction project relates deeply to these virtues. When members are conducting research and trying to come up with meaningful ideas, they are faced with a lot of challenges that might makethem lose their patience. Members have to search deep into books to find hidden information that will assist then in perfecting their projects. Patience and focus, in this case, will give them perseverance. 2.2. Usage of Credit Cards versus Debit Cards Undoubtedly, if credit cards are compared to debit cards, then studies have shown that there are some perceived barriers that create hindrances in the adoption of credit cards far and wide. Rysman (2009) used the data from Survey of Consumer Finance, conducted by Federal Reserve Bank and applied Regression analysis technique to control all the related explanatory variables. Results confirmed that age and income are strong predictors in payment choice. However, Reward programs do not have a major influence on the overall usage of debit and credit cards. Additionally, payment size has U-shaped relationship with credit and debit card; credit cards are mainly used in low dollar amount and debit in high dollar amount transactions. Several studies have also kept their focus on the consumer choice of using debit cards as compared to other payment methods. A study found that credit card revolvers are more probably to use debit card and less probably to use credit cards, as compared with the customer who repay their balance each month. These both groups are different in their perception of payments, like revolvers have the perception that debit cards are not for the ease of use and acceptability but for the budgeting purpose and for control over money (Sprenger & Stavins, 2008). In addition, Zinman (2004) collected the data from approximate 4,000 US Households Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF) 2001, to figure out the consumer choice among Debit and Credit card at the Point-of-Sale. Results indicated that debit-card users rationally choose to use debit rather than credit for minimizing transaction costs and for not facing a binding credit limit. King (2005) analyzed the reasons that why consumer... ...(2003) surveyed internet users in 2001 to analyze the choice of payment instrument at point of sale (POS) and for bill payments and found that consumers who easily adopt new technology are more prone to use electronic payment channels. Results also depicted that factors like transaction value, bill’s frequency and physical characteristics of POS (cashier presence and self-service) determine the choice of payment mode. On the other hand, Nnaemeka, Ernest and Onuoha (2011) examined the level of plastic money usage and found that despite the popularity of plastic money in payment methods, cash usage is still leading over the e-purse (electronic purse) usage in Nigeria. The reasons for the result found in study are, risk to security, privacy, customer inertia (psychology effect), illiteracy and lack of operational facilities (less number of â€Å"Point of Sales† terminals).
